Monday Mishmash 5/14/12

Happy Monday! Here's my mishmash of thoughts:

  1. Mother's Day  I hope all you moms had a great Mother's Day.
  2. Cape May  I'll be escaping to Cape May for a long weekend, so if I disappear Friday, you know where I'll be. :)
  3. Writing zone  I have been in the zone with my WIP. In the first week I wrote just shy of 40K. I'm hoping this moment keeps up.
  4. Knee Deep  I'm reading the contemporary romance KNEE DEEP by Jolene Perry, and it's amazing. Such a powerful message that all teen girls can benefit from.
  5. Homework  To prepare for kindergarten, my daughter's pre-k class gets homework every night. My daughter loves it. Wonder how long that will last. LOL
That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

  1. Kelly wow your busy I love monday mishmash by the way.
I think everything I did over the weekend is still on my mind like my lifegaurding test and dance show. the only things I'm thinking about this week is laundry, a pool party I have to do and some writing.

  2. 40K words in one week?! Wow, girl, that's awesome.

I started reading "Bullies, Bast*rds, and B*tches" by Jessica Morrell this weekend. It's about how to write the bad guys. I'm only on the first chapter and it sounds promising. I think I'm going to need this book in my future!

Good luck with your WIP, Kelly!

  3. My mom's day was fantastic! My 7 year old made me breakfast. :D Wow, congrats on your WIP. 40k in a week is impressive.
I'll be hosting Jolene's book tour for Knee-deep and can't wait to read it. I loved her other book, Night Sky.
Oh, homework... good to hear your daughter loves it. Probably the teacher makes it fun. My daughter didn't like homework the first week of school last year. Complained all the time. now she loves homework..haha

  4. Home work! LOL. My daughters had a lot of it, just because shes had to miss so much kindergarten. She is no big fan. And 40,000? Holy guacamole!

  6. I'm happy to have Blood Clay recognized, like any "mother"! I blogged about the Eric Hoffer Award. http://valerienieman.blogspot.com/2012/05/working-class-writer.html

  7. I'm going to my first writers conference in a week and a half, so I'm completely distracted with all things writing (we're workshopping pages and queries at the conference)--preparing the pages I need to bring, getting the elevator pitch right, business cards, etc. A little scared. Mostly excited.

    1. Ooh, have fun! Don't be scared. Conferences are amazing experiences. Enjoy every minute!

  8. I understand the 40,000 words coming out all at once because you probably feel like I do sometimes--that if I don't get it out immediately--something might get lost or forgotten. Have fun in Cape May.

  9. Love to hear you're in the writing zone and very jealous of your upcoming vacation. As for me, I've got a guest post on thrillers I need to write, and I need to knock out at least 2K/day this week on the WIP. Buckling down...

    Have a great vacation!

  11. Mother's Day was great. I'm not in the same city with my daughters, but they both sent me cards and flowers. I received an enormous purple box filled with stunningly beautiful red roses and purple lilies. They're sitting in my dining room for all my BnB guests to enjoy. The room is filled with a wonderful aroma.

Lucky you.... escaping to Cape May. Hope you can relax and have a great time.

    40K in a week?....not bad for such a busy lady.:=)

Reading the journal "Beatdom". My daughter is now asst. Editor and writing poetry for it.

Homework in pre-school? Wow! What ever happened to Ring Around The Rosies?

    1. Aw, what nice Mother's Day surprises. Enjoy!

I'm hoping to relax for a few days.

Yes, 40K was a lot to fit into my week, but the story and characters were very demanding of my time. LOL

The homework thing is to prepare them for kindergarten. Or should I say to prepare the parents?

  12. Greetings Lady Kelly

Hmmm. Things on my mind... to the extent I have one. A mind, I mean. I am male, after all... (blushes).

Mother's Day. Well, my mother had one. Apparently it involved lobsters. I'd have asked how they were involved, but I think I'm too young (blushes).

Cape May. It's not so much 'Cape May' - more 'Cope (with) May. I received an email from MuseitUp Publishing contracting my Grevious Bodily Assualt on English, Yiddish and Greek - along with Greek mythology. 'Road like a River' will be published in January. But... well, while I was checking up on some bio data there, I found out 'A Comedy of Terrors isn't coming out in July after all. It's coming out in June... and all my last-push marketing plans went up in pretty pink smoke :-).

Writing zone. Well, since CoT is out in June, and Road in January, the logical thing to do is return to the sequel to 'A Comedy of Terrors'. Yes, I have 15K words done. But, um, I've written two other books since then and messed with some others. The 'last edit' date on the file for 'A Not-Summer Night's Scream' is in 2010. Now. where did I leave my Segorian head? (blushes again :-P).

Knee Deep: Messing round with the technical side of how to post multimedia files on my web site (don't worry - there aren't any there yet :-) ). I'm thinking (after some success in another channel) of posting audio readings of smaples from CoT and Road. I'm, er, re-reading Segorian. To get that head back. And, um, trying not to get distracted by the idea I had for a YA. Bad Graeme. _Bad_ Graeme! :-). Hmmm. I wonder what or who anyone in 'A Comedy of Terrors' might be a role-model for... any offers? :-)

    1. Graeme, good to see you, and a huge congrats on the book contract! That's awesome! I know what you mean about going back to write a sequel after you've written other books since the original. I'm doing the same thing right now. Good luck!

  13. Kelly = wonder woman.
I must confess that when I read your Monday mishmashes I wonder if you are one person. 40K words of original writing in one week…Now I know you must be at least four. : )

  14. I agree with Mirka.^^ You amaze me, Kelly, with how much you are able to accomplish AND with a pre-K daughter. I did not have that in me when my kids were little.

Hope you had a great Mother's Day, Superwoman! :)

I'm almost finished with Knee Deep. It's really good and I want to sit down with it but my current WIP is demanding all my time.

  17. Congrats to you on the writing roll! You must feel so happy. I have never been to Cape May- but I hear it is wonderful. Have fun on your long weekend. I thin kthat is adorable that your daughter is excited for homework. She probably feels like a big kid. I think that might last until...3rd grade. :)

    1. Thanks! I'm trying to get as much writing time in as I can before this weekend. I doubt I'll get much done at Cape May, though I know myself well enough that I can say I will sneak some time. ;)

I hope the homework excitement lasts as long as possible. LOL.

  18. I am thinking about the writer's conference (my first) I am attending this week. A tad nervous, to be honest. I was on the road for mama's day, but I came home to a clean house (the boy surprised me. I am ever grateful for tender mercies.

    1. Coming home to a clean house is a thing of magic. I'm going away this weekend and I'm afraid what my husband will do to the house in just three days without me asking him to pick up after himself.

Have a great time at your conference. How fun! You'll have a blast. Talk to everyone. People are very friendly at conferences.

  19. I hope you fun on your trip. I'm working on book 2 and for some reason it's like pulling teeth right now. But somehow I've managed to force myself to write for at least an hour a day. I blame it on the warm weather.

    1. Book twos are hard. I'm writing one right now, too. I've learned a lot of tricks that I need to start doing while writing book one to help me with book two. Of course, that doesn't help me this time around, but next time. LOL

  20. How cool that she loves homework! I was that weird kid that liked homework too and that lasted until the middle of high school. :)

    What's on my mind:
    1) Finishing revisions on my work in progress.
    2) Sending more queries
    3) Making an editorial calendar for my blogs because shiz is getting out of hand
    4) Revising my resume
    5) Keeping my head up!
