Confession Time Again!

If you've been following my blog for a while, you know I'm pretty open about all my quirks. (And I have a lot of them.) But today I'm sharing some things about myself that you might not know. Here it goes:

  • I'm the worst boss in the world.  I won't even let myself break for meals. I eat with one hand and type with the other, and if it takes me longer than 7 minutes to eat, I'll just give up eating all together and get back to typing with two hands.
  • I rock out to teeny bopper music.  Yup. When I'm stressed out, I turn to my 6-year-olds playlist on my iPod, which consists of songs from Victoria Justice, R5, Big Time Rush, and Selena Gomez. Call me crazy but it's instant relaxation.
  • I have laptop separation anxiety.  I have to have one of my laptops on at all times. Unless I'm sleeping, when I have my smartphone on the nightstand in case I need it in the middle of the night.
  • My day planner stole my memory.  Ever since I started using a day planner, I can't remember anything I don't write down. It's a little annoying and very inconvenient.
  • I fall in love with every male lead I write.  I feel bad for guys in real life because they can't compare to book boyfriends. Sorry, guys. And I fall for my male leads every time.
Okay, I've embarrassed myself—yet again. Now it's your turn. What do you have to confess about yourself?

  1. I'm not quite so bad with the typing. However, my least favourite chore of all is sweeping, because try as I might I can't do that one-handed, which means I cannot read whilst I sweep! :)

I fall in love with all my male characters, too. That's bad news for the man I will (hopefully) eventually meet.

I like to have my phone with me at all times, because I use the Evernote function on it to write snippets into it. It's super handy.

I have a chance for you to share more, if you so desire. :) I don't know how often you do tags anymore, but if you want to do this one, you may. Here you go. :)

  4. Every time I read about how much you do, I end up feeling like I really ought to be working harder. Ah, well. Life is short, and I'll just slouch along like the happy slug I am!

    1. I think I can be extreme sometimes. I need to learn to scale it back a bit.

  5. LOL, I eat while I type too. It's very annoying to myself, but I can't see to stop.

  6. those confessions aren't that bad! and if we didn't love our own male characters, we wouldn't expect readers too, so I think it's perfectly normal. :)

  7. As I sit here wolfind down my breakfast, I had to laugh at the first one. Are there people out there who don't do this? Honestly, I can't remember the last meal I ate not in front of my computer :) Love the last one, totally know what you mean!

  8. I write for the younger crowd so I don't have book boyfriends (except for the ones I read about, and those I make up in my head, and TV characters, and ... etc.) I can't eat fast. I really have to go very slow at eating to enjoy it. Don't know why.

It's so fun to read these, Kelly, and I admire how open you are! Your quirks are great.

  9. My confession is that I really am a one-thing-at-a-time person. Multitasking and juggling are not my strong suits! But, like the tortoise, I do get to the finish line. :)

  10. I have crumbs under my keyboard. I love my book boys too. I worked very hard to get rid of my mid-western accent. I named my lizard after the bad guy in one of my books. And I have a thing for Supers, which is embarrassing to me and my children.

  11. I can't verbally recount a situation if the person I'm talking to is moving around doing stuff. lol

    It's my A.D.D.

  12. Lol, Kelly that's hilarious. I'm the same way with laptops and my iphone. I've actually had my staff take my phone away at work.

  13. I love my make leads too. And I depend on my lists andGoogle calendar to organize my life.

  14. I eat many a meal in front of the computer (breakfast was at the computer today). I need my planner to keep everything straight- but I blame it on being busy. Who can be expected to remember it all?

A weird thing about me is that I love to draw in pencil- but I am VERY specific about the type of pencil and the eraser has to be good. I do not like those eraser caps- they aren't the same (I give my semi-used pencils to my co-author for her classroom, since I never make it through a whole pencil and it would be a waste to get rid of them).

Love the pencil thing, Jess! Very quirky. :)

  15. My turn-

I still watch little kids shows, and have not a young sibling, kids of my own, or students of kids 10 and under to hide behind.

Before I even started writing for children,
While others my age were obsessed with shows like American Idol, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and (Insert teen drama here), I was watching Dora, Franklin, and various other programs and movies in that vein.

Of course, I did watch other things more grown-up, and LIKED it, but I always a show or two that I loved as a child that I still watch today.

Since I did not have a great childhood (Even though it wasn't abusive), they were my escape in the way books and video games can be.

Even with whatever problems the characters on the show had, they lived in a world I still LONG for.

By that, I mean a world where you didn't need a car to go EVERYWHERE.

The kids had some freedom of movement without helicopter parents at every turn, and let's face it, kids growing up now have it harder in that respect than you or your parents had, and I mean no disrespect to parents who are just trying to do right by their kids or teens and keep them safe.
I'm just asking you to be sensitive and understanding to the fact that it's hard on them needing to be driven somewhere as much as you doing the driving are.
As much as we complain that kids and teens are overly entitled and selfish than in generations past, part of that isn't by choice, but out of necessity to cope with their lack of freedom. Now I'm not saying some kids or teens aren't just that way, but some of that I do feel is a way some kids and teens try to cope, and it's no secret that kids and teens often cope in ways that aren't healthy, but the alternative would be more drastic, whether it's cutting, or even suicide.

It's not as if kids don't EVER want to do for themselves. However, if they don't live in an environment that allows, and dare I say, VALUES that, they become the opposite of what they frankly want to be. Period.

Parents aren't the ONLY ones responsible for some kids and teens being entitled and selfish. Nor is ALL of that self-obsessed entitlement "Kids being Kids." Where they grow up and go to school, play their parts, too.

As a former teacher, Kelly, do you think I'm at least HALF-right on this? I know you respected your students, I'm just speaking in general terms, as well as from my own experience in school, and this was prior to the nightmares of "No Child Left Behind" and now "Race to the Top."

While I do feel both of those initiatives truly meant well, just alienated more students than they helped, too much testing for students, and making teachers jump through more hoops than they deserve.

Particularly if you live in cities, or parts of the world where carpools are just a way of life, hard on the parents, but hard on the kids, too.

  17. Oh, boy--THESE are the things you're embarrassed of? Don't even get me started on doing art with my friend and singing along to Pokemon: The Soundtrack on the highest volume setting.

I feel ya on falling in love with the male heroes we write. They're our own perfect love interests, hmm?

  18. Kelly, your confessions are so sweet and endearing that there is NO WAY I will compare to any of mine, a whole lot less charming.
I confess- I fall in love not with the males in my stories, (hey, I write PBs and up to MG only, so there!) but with the stories themselves. When I first write them they all seem too amazingly wonderful. That lasts only until the first fatal flaw occurs to me, shortly after the first draft is done. Then the real work starts.

  19. I eat at the computer, too. But I REALLY relate to the one about your day planner stealing your memory. It's true!

  21. I don't think you've embarrassed yourself. You sound like you have fun a lot of the time. Now about that memory thing. I think it's definitely a sign of the times. I used to know all of my friends' and relatives' phone numbers by heart. I don't even know mine. Why bother? My cell does.

    Have a great weekend.

  27. hahaha. I have separation anxiety when away from my laptop - especially since joining Twitter. And I sped far too much time thinking and not doing. And I eat too much cake. Other than that, I'm kinda nearly goshdarn perfect - like you!!

  28. Oh, gee, I fall in love with every male lead I write, too. And when I've finished the book it's like I've broken up with someone. I actually miss them.

And my laptop is my twin. We go everywhere together. In fact, if I don't have it my family will even ask where my "partner" is. :)

  29. My favorite is still the plunger confession, although these have merit as well. Mine is more of an affliction - I cannot stop myself from singing. It just happens. Life is clam and suddenly I hear music coming from somewhere... heaven help the stranger standing next to me if I recognize the song.
