Writer Wednesday: Writing Space

Right now I'm in the process of cleaning out a room in my house that will become my office. Yes, I'm going to finally have an office. The renovations on my house are just about complete. We're still waiting on a few things, but we are moving my daughter's toys out of one room and moving my desk, bookshelf, and other office supplies in.

I don't have pictures yet since things are a mess at the moment. You know how whenever you do a project it looks like a bomb went off before you get everything settled? Well, that's pretty much my current state. But I'm enjoying the process because I'm going through my things and deciding where everything should go. This is going to be my space. The only downside is that my treadmill will share the room with me since we have no other place to put it, but it is mine, so I guess it's fair. Maybe jogging will inspire me when I need a little motivation, too. ;) And I'll finally get to frame the posters of my book covers my husband had made for me. Yay!

So while I figure out what my office will look like, I want to know what you're ideal writing space would be (or is, if you're lucky enough to have it already). Tell me in the comments.

  1. I totally understand. When I start cleaning and organizing it seems to look a lot worse before it gets better. At least it gets better though.

One day I would like to have an office. I would love at least walls covered with bookshelves. I also like to tape flashcards to the wall to organize and think so I would leave one wall probably blank for me to add things like that from time to time. Then of course I need a big desk and a nice big comfy chair when I need to get away from the desk for a bit. One day. :)

    1. Now I want a giant cork board for post-it notes!

    2. A cork board would be awesome. I do have a white board right now that I really like.

  2. I have a writing space, and I totally under-utilize it! I have a little room in our finished basement with a desk and a comfy chair, book shelves, a cabinet to store promotional materials, and even framed book covers on the wall. Yet, I still end up writing with my laptop on the couch in the living room way too often. I need to make better use of my writing space in 2015!

    1. I used to write on my couch but it killed my back. I moved to the dining room table. I'll be happy to have a comfy desk chair.

  3. you're going to love that office! I just write out of my bedroom, but if I could choose an ideal space it would be an office of my very own, with a comfy chair (i can't write at a desk) and a window view of something nice, beach, pool. There would be book shelves for all my books and NO TV in there since I get way too distracted. :)

  4. Awesome way to start the new year! Getting a writing office together sounds wonderful. Right now I write in my dining room- but an office would be dreamy. I would want to have quick access to my favorite writing books and I love to have things that inspire me close by. I think your framed covers will be a treat to look at while you work. Enjoy! Can't wait to see pictures!

    1. The one thing I've already set up is the shelf in my desk with my books. It's amazing how often I need to refer to them when working on later books in the series.

  5. I have a beautiful desk but I rarely sit at it. My ideal writing space has become seat on BART ( the train I get back and forth to work on) an overstuffed chair with an ottoman in my bedroom, often the top of my bed.. any place really where there is place to sit. I am working on a story about a new bride and most of it is being written on the train and my easy chair. Congrats on your office and finishing the construction.

  6. I tend to do most of my writing in my campus office, or the library or a computer lab, wherever's convenient. My desk at home is mostly left for stashing books yet to be read.

    Happy New Year, Kelly!

  7. The treadmill in the office, I can tell you from experience, does not breed creativity. It does constantly berate me, however, with smirky looks, impatient sighs, and anything else it can do to make me feel guilty when it's not in use.

    Happy New Year, Kelly!

    1. Yeah, I'm not happy about the treadmill but there's no where else to put it.

  8. Congrats. My ideal writing space would be a tree house, a Rivendell like tree house that is. :)

    1. Thanks, Mirka. The house is really coming together nicely. It's just funny how cleaning one thing makes such a mess of other areas. lol

  11. Oh, I love writing spaces. Mine is 1/4 of our basement. I have 15' of desktop stained and varnished by my husband, bookshelves, filing cabinets, an easy chair, lamps, a space heater, select pieces of my kids' artwork, a tiled floor, space to tack things on the walls, and I guess the computer goes without saying. All done on the cheap. It's not as pretty as many that I see pictures of online, but it works and allows me to free up all the bedrooms for visiting family. I love it.

  12. I would want it in front of a window looking out over the garden or far, far away sky and sea.

Wishing you all the best for 2015!

  13. Located at the opposite end from living quarters, my home office provides ideal solitude for both writing and work - so much so that my family calls it the "black hole"! It's everything I could dream of with two paneled walls, floor to near ceiling bookshelves filled with my favorite authors, including one for reference books and a huge arch window looks out into my backyard and the city beyond. There's an extra chair across from my desk for the occasional business associate or whichever of my two Chocolate Labs beats the other to it and last summer a great horned owl perched in the tree outside the window and appeared to watch me work all day! Downside? Our home is very old, somewhat drafty, the skylight over my desk leaks when it rains (gads) and the comfortable 'poofy' chair I'd always wanted has caused me no end of worry about my changing shape - ha!
Careful what you wish for folks, when it comes to comfortable space.:-) I refuse to have a television, but I admit, I have a radio for soft music.

    1. I'd love bookshelves like that! I think all good things have downsides, don't they? But it sounds like you love your writing space and that's all that matters.
