Friday Feature: Star of the Team

A girl.
A dream.
An accident.
A dream shattered.

Eleven-year-old Kate Taylor dreams of being the star of her basketball team, Angels. When Kate’s tooth is knocked out at one of the games and her mother, who is also her coach, says she can’t play until the tooth the dentist replants heals, Kate’s dreams are in jeopardy. Add Emily, the new girl at school who claims she’s the best, and Kate faces a challenge to prove that she is the star.

Will Kate succeed? Or will Emily ruin Kate’s plans?

Bev’s Bio:

Most of the time, you’ll find Beverly in front of her computer, writing the stories little voices whisper in her ear. When she’s not writing, she takes long walks and snaps pictures of clouds, wild flowers, birds and deer. To some of her friends, she is affectionately known as the “Bug Lady” because she rescues butterflies, moths, walking sticks, and praying mantis from her cats.
For twenty-two years Beverly taught children in grades two through five how to read and write. They taught her patience. Now, she teaches a women’s Sunday school class at her church. To relax she plays the piano. Her cats don’t appreciate good music and run and hide when she tickles the ivories.

  1. So wonderful to see Beverly here today! I haven't read this one by her, but I am glad to hear about it. It does sound like an interesting and story and one that many MG kids will be able to relate to (something coming in the way of their dreams). Wishing Beverly the best of luck! :)

    2. Thank you, Jess. The idea for the story came from watching my granddaughter play basketball and how competitive the girls were. Luck is always good. :)

  2. A great topic for middle school age! I think it was my fantasy growing up that one of my parents was a teacher, then I'd get special treatment. But this would have shown me a different perspective! :)

    1. I had a few friends who parents were teachers. They hated it. Lol

    2. I was a teacher, Diane, and what my boys discovered was that I knew about everything they did. Someone always told me. :)

    3. I did substitution for one year, props to you, Beverly! I prayed I never got 7th or 8th grade, but every time I got a call to sub, *heart sinking* it was for those very classes!!

    4. Haha. I understand. I substituted some too. Wild. Toward the end of school, my fifth-graders started acting more like middle school students since they'd soon be there. Those are tough grades to teach. I bet you did a great job. :)

  5. I love the painted-like feel of the cover. As for basketball, I was always horrible. =) But for a basketball loving MG'er, they'd probably eat this up!

    1. Aidana WillowRaven is the talented artist that did the cover, Leandra. I wasn't an athlete either. Never played sports. I was a band kid. My granddaughter was the athlete in the family.

    2. I was banned from basketball in gym my senior year because I got hurt so much. I actually got a girl's fake nails stuck in my palm once. Not fun.

  6. Thank you for featuring Star of the Team today, Kelly. Sorry I'm late to the party. I've been having Internet problems or computer problems. Maybe both. I appreciate you sharing my story with your friends. Have a lovely weekend. Thanks again.

  9. I wasn't in sports in high school but I can still relate to books like this--I think anyone who has ever had a dream can. Sounds very inspiring.

    1. I wasn't an athlete, Stephanie, and didn't dream of being a star. I dreamed of being a majorette in the band. That dream came true. Most everyone has some sort of dream, I think.

  11. Terrific post, Kelly! Star of The Team is sure to be a favorite as it certainly speaks to the timeless competitive nature of all young girls. I would have loved it when I was that age and am sure I will now! The cover is quite compelling as it depicts an air of uncertain determination - perfect! :-)

    1. Thank you, Diedre. I think Aidana did a lovely job with the cover. The story is loosely based on one of my granddaughters who was quite competative when she was in sports.
