Monday Mishmash 2/13/12

Happy Monday! Here's what's on my mind today:

  1. Valentine's Day  I'm not big on this holiday, but for those who are, I hope you enjoy the day!
  2. YA Bound  In addition to this blog, I've joined the amazing team of ladies over at YA Bound. If you love YA novels, you need to follow this blog. You can find it here or in my sidebar.
  3. Book Signing  I'm heading back to the Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort on Sunday for another signing. I  love them over there.
  4. Night Owl  I've been staying up late at night to write, and I'm still getting up at 6AM. I'm wondering how long this will last before I completely crash.
  5. Computer issues  I almost lost all my edits for the second book in the TOUCH OF DEATH trilogy because Word crashed and corrupted my file. I managed to recover the file and backed it up in three different place. *big sigh of relief*
That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

  2. The late nights, and early mornings creep up on you. After a while you may have to take one night and turn in early. That happens to me. It's strange to fall asleep at 9:30 pm, but about every two or three months it gets me and I have to.

Today I'm thinking about the journey. From first word to last.

    1. I actually went to be a little earlier last night because I surpassed the 10K mark on my WIP and felt I should be rewarded. ;)

  3. Heading back to class today and wondering when I'll get to sleep some more.

  4. Congrats on YA Bound! Sounds great!! And I'm so thankful that you recovered your files! I've been in that situation before. It's not a fun place to be.

    1. Thanks! Yes, the file thing was so scary! I think I have a few more gray hairs--no, wait. Pretend I didn't say that. No gray hairs here (because I rip them out).

  5. Wading through the snow to pay bills. And then the usual translating. That's pretty much it for today.

    Glad you recovered your edits!

    1. Everyone got hit with snow this weekend. Luckily, it was only a dusting here. I hope you can dig your way out, and good luck with your translating.

  6. I love YA!!! So yay! I hope you don't crash...I am hoping I do. LOL. I'm so tired from not sleeping. I need to sleep tonight!

  7. Wow, I'm so glad that you didn't lose your edits for the second book! Word is the best program in the world, but it can be really annoying at times as well! Once I pushed two buttons accidently while writing (I had written like 30 pages without saving beforehand - yes, I'm an idiot) and ALL I had written was gone. I was totally panicked until my Mom said like: 'press the back button!' Well, thank GOD for the back button! :)

  8. Lady Kelly

Greetings. And yes, it's been a while. But I have an excuse. Sort of :-(.
What's on my mind? Well, a few things. Like:
1: How long should a piece of string be? Or, if not a piece of string, patience. And I know, it should generally be longer than we let it be. But someone's considering 'Road like a river' - and someone else wants to. But courtesy suggests letting ConsidererA finish their considersation before involving potential ConsidererB. And yes, I know that Considerer isn't a word. But it should be :-).
2: Major Revisions - yes, me too (blushes). One of the characters in 'Jack Shadow' just smacked me over the head and said 'Hey! No!! That othet guy didn't do that! It was me!'. Problem was, they were right. So now I have to go back and make it them (blushes2).
3: This was going to be 'why I've been away'. Or at least quiet. But now it's 'Happy Birthday, Lady Kelly!' :-) :-).
4: Late nights. Well, late nights are when I've got most things done. Ever since I was a baby, I've apparently slept about three hours a night on average. And I _still_ don't have enough hours in the day!
5: OK. So I've been away. Or at least quiet. And here's the why:

    1. Characters always know better than we do. Good luck with those revisions. I'm sure they will be totally worth all your hard work. It's nice to have you back too!

  9. And - of course - it's not your birthday. We did that bit back in December. But guess who just posted on the wrong blog - and saw the birthday note while he was doing it (blushes) :-).

  10. OMG, Kelly! Your computer issues must have given you a mild heart attack. Glad things came out okay.

I am finishing up the last scenes of my WIP and will head into editing later in the week. Should be good fun. :)

Also, congrats on another book signing--sounds divine!

  12. Hi-Good luck on your book signing, and nice news on the YA Bound gig. Today is my younger son's birthday. He was a special Valentines treat some years back. We'll be headed to al Bustan's, a Lebonese restaurant, as my son is a 4th year Arabic student, hoping to work in liason with the middle east at some point.

  13. Thank goodness you recovered your edits. There's no worse feeling, is there? And good luck on the book signing. I'm babysitting today, but hoping to get some writing done in between playing with the two-year-old.

    1. Yes, it is!
There's always nap time! I got a lot of writing done during my daughter's naps. I hope the little one you're watching gives you a break.

  14. Loved the mishmash topics. Don't you hate when your computer almost destroys a writing file? I promised myself I'd back-up my writing immediately - but I often forget.

    1. Same here. I have to get better about backing things up.

  15. Big ‘ouch’ to #5, then ending on a triumphant note. Your mish-mashes make positively tasty stews, Kelly.

  16. Oh WOW! Glad you were able to recover the file. That always freaks me out. I'm so afraid I'll lose something. And good luck on the sleeping. I can stay up late as long as I can sleep in. I'm terrible if I don't get my sleep. You amaze me that you get up at 6am! That's awesome!

  17. Your computer issue reminded me of something that happened last night. Husband and I went out for a beer and we were playing a video game when I noticed a small USB flash drive placed on the video game. Nobody was in sight.

I took it to the bartender and let her know that someone might be looking for it sometime soon, because had I lost my flash drive, I would be heart-broken (much of my backup stories and writing assignments are on there). I carry it everywhere I go (in my pocket).

    1. I'd be afraid to carry my flash drives around. They'd end up in the washing machine or something equally as bad.

  18. I can't seem to find your blog somedays Kelly! Yay for today that I did. So glad you were able to restore your MS. Shoo! That's so scary when that happens.

Valentines Day...eh, its all right. Hope you enjoy your day, esp. since its one of your favs.

  20. Thanks for stopping by my newest blog and your nice thoughts as well. I know it won't be easy, but life isn't suppose to be easy.

  21. Long days, Kelly! I can't stay up at night, but I do climb out of bed about 4AM when I'm working on a story. No interruptions at that time of day either.

    1. Lee, 4AM? I think I'd rather keep it split up--a little late and a little early. Getting up that early would make me tired. I know really it's the same amount of sleep, but it feels different to me.

  22. You may be able to keep the night owl thing up for a while. I can go in cycles of staying up late and getting up early. As long as I can catch up at some point (a late day on a weekend). So sorry to hear about your computer. That is so frustrating. I try to be good about saving my ms to a flashdrive and the computer, but sometimes I am busy and I forget. I need to back everything up this weekend when I have time! Best of luck!

    1. Jess, I had it saved on my flash drive and Word destroyed the file right off it! Crazy. No it's on my external hard drive, on my flash drive, and emailed to myself. :)

  23. I'm so paranoid about crashes. I back up twice plus email the work to myself.

What's on my mind? Revisions, word count, The Big Bang Theory, sticky notes, vacation ideas and warm pajamas.

  24. You touched a nerve - the crashing. I back up and have a cloud. Losing data is the single fear I can not overcome. I a not big into any holiday that demands present giving because I like to give presents when I feel like it, on a blue Monday or happy it's Friday. I like to give my kids little treats just because. I also buy presents for me from me ( again, just because). As for writing, my motto is write when you must, everything else will fall into place.

  29. Hi, I'm a little late to this but...

Glad you managed to recover your files. My husband is constantly updating and rebuilding our computers (even the new ones) so I live in constant dread of losing files. Thank god for memory sticks.

This week is half term so my mind is mostly on entertaining children and my husband, which for the most part cross over and meet in a board game or a family trip.

My writing has been put off for the most part this week but I've had some valuable insights about my characters which has reduced the frustration at not being able to keep to my writing routine.
