Writing Space

I don't have an office in my house, though one day I hope to change that. For now, I write in one of two locations. The first is on my couch, which is terrible for my back. So, recently, I've been writing from my dining room table. I sit on a wooden chair, which is much better for my back and not as uncomfortable as it sounds. I wrap a blanket around me to cushion certain areas that may lack padding. (I have no butt. Yes, I just went there.)

Here it is:

Nothing glamorous, I know. I dream of one of those oversized chairs and a gorgeous desk, but for now, this will do. And in case anyone is trying to read what it says on that flower pot of flash drives, it says, "Toe of Frog." My sister painted it for me, and since I kill every flower I go near, I used it for my flash drives, because I have a lot of them. :)

I know dining room tables are for eating, but in my house, they are for writing. How about you? Where do you write? Do you have an office?

  1. Ditto, I mostly write curled up on the sofa, unless I am really trying to concentrate and then like you I head to the dinning room table (which also doubles as the homework spot for the house too!)

My dream house has a huge library and a magnificant oak desk to write from. PS love the flower pot!

    1. Sleepy Joe, I like the way you think. That would be a dream house. :)

  2. I move my laptop all over the house, wherever the quietest place happens to be. The family room is my first spot, but once the TV goes on, I move to the "library" -- which is the grand name we have for the front room on the first floor. But I can still hear the TV from there, and if it's annoying I'll go down to the finished basement.

When my back hurts, I too end up at the table.

    1. Isn't it great that laptops can move with us so easily. What would we do without them?

  3. Me and you have the same writing space!

  4. I usually write longhand, so I write at my desk, in front of my computer which is a desktop. Sometimes I sit on the sofa or at the table, but that's mostly when there is no one around and I have fewer distractions. I enjoy being comfortable first .. it helps my creative mind to focus on what's at hand.

    1. Comfort is key. It's a lot easier to be creative when you're in a comfy place.

  5. I've never been a desk person. Even if I'm sitting at a table, the chair is facing away from it and my laptop is always on my lap.I write on my couch or even on the floor. I'm with you with the flowers. I've tried but I just can't keep them alive.

  6. Your work space is so tidy! Like you I don't have a space of my own as such (hence the name for my blog - a room of my own!!). I write on my lap top wherever I can find a quiet spot, though in the mornings when the family are all out at school and college I curl up on the sofa, place the lap top on my knees and write to my heart's content. However during holiday time........

    1. Isn't it tough to find a good writing spot when there are other people in the house to bother—I mean, distract you? ;)

  7. I have an office, but I haven't used it in a long time. I plan on decorating it in the next few weeks, even pick out a nice desk lamp. Maybe that will help me migrate back to it. :)

  8. I do not have a writing space, though I dearly want a writing space. For some reason, I write on my bed. Not in the way you'd think. I set my computer on the bed, kneel down, and write that way. I don't know why. I hate sitting. LOL

  9. Kitchen table, dinning room table, Panera Bread Co, my bed. I had an "office" in the second bedroom which also doubled as the craft room/storage room and is now Baby #2's room. Someday I will have an office that is crisp and clean - with an orange wall for fun.

  10. I have an office, but for the last few years, had to share it with the kids, so I ended up at the kitchen table on many a day. :)

  11. I use my youngest two daughters' bedroom because they have a nice, really nice two level computer desk designed for 2 desk tops. The top has the two screens of the desktops (my old one, which is still working and their equally ancient one...Dell Desktops do chug on like Energizer battery...their laptops sucks) and the lower shelf is for the keyboards, but the space is wide enough for my laptop. At times I share the desk with one of them as they do their online homework. I dream of an office too.

  12. I'm exactly like you (except for the butt part -- I got more than enough padding there! lol). If I'm working on a WIP, I sit at a table in a hard chair in the bedroom where it's quiet. But if I'm blogging, emailing, or commenting (like now), I sit on the couch, watch TV ... and slouch awfully. :P

  13. I have an office with a desktop computer, but it's full of things like bills that need to be paid and books that need to be put away and email that needs to be answered, so to do my creative writing, I escape into the dining room and sit at the table on a straight chair.

  14. I do have an office and a real office chair I was lucky enough to get for $2 at a garage sale. My office is not even close to being as neat as yours, Kelly!

  15. Haha! I can realate. Nope no office, I typically write on a couch or bed (by the way I am off the truck now and in Florida job searching :)

  16. Your writing space looks comfy enough. Since my boys are all grown and gone, I have a small bedroom that I've converted to my "office" or writing room. It has a sofa that makes into a bed for company, a book shelf, desk, two file cabinets and stacks and stacks of folders. Today, I've sworn to clean up the mess and through stuff away. But I'm so lazy. Besides, I'd rather write. :)

  17. I share a room with my kids... It's the office / classroom / laundry . Not so glamourous but it is what it is. I prefer to do most of my writing on my PC unless I'm away from home. One day I dream of my own cubby house writing nook of sorts! Xx
    Happy writing

  19. I have a laptop with a bright pink cover and I take it everywhere. For some reason my best writing is often done plugged in, sitting on the floor of my bedroom with my 7yo playing around me. Come to think of it, a real writing space would be fantastic.

    1. Wow, you can write with your 7-year-old playing around you? That's great focus!

  20. At least you have a spot you call yours. Doesn't matter where as long as it works for you.
I have a whole half room with my computer desk against one wall and my craft table against the opposite wall.

  21. I sit in an oversized arm chair in the family room with my feet propped up on an ottoman. My laptop stays on my...lap. A little side table holds my notebooks, pens and coffee. It my little 4x4 square of happiness. :)

  22. I write at a desk in the corner of my bedroom. I did write at a dressing table for several years, but upgraded to a desk and comfortable chair last year as I kept getting back and shoulder ache. The new chair is amazing. What-you're a writer and you have no butt? You must be good at not eating whilst you write...!

    1. No, I can't eat and write and since I don't get up from the computer much, that means no snacking for me. :)

  23. Where's the mug of cold coffee? I write in the back bedroom, on an old pine table. Trouble is, it overlooks the pond, so I get terribly distracted by the fish! And the cat comes and sits on the table to 'help' me out! Such is the writer's life.

    1. Carol, I'm way too accident prone to drink and type. My poor laptop would be a goner. I drink my coffee before I write. :)

  24. Hi, Kelley, your space looks cozy.
I write in an office at home, which is covered with photos and clippings. I also belong to a writers' space, which has dozens of members. I always get lots of work done there, because I can't do laundry or other distracting stuff.

  25. I write at my dining room table, too! I have it set up like a little office and I can look out at my porch. An office would be dreamy. Happy writing!

  26. My writing gets done whereever I can get to a computer. A campus lab, public library, whatever.

I do have a desk at home for jotting things down, but at this point, the desk doesn't get too much use!

  27. I do have an office but it's small and I don't have the right kind of desk. I also watch TV in there, it's kind of a "jack of all traits" kinda room. I kinda of move all around the house. For awhile I'll keep my computer in there, then when I get tired of that I'll move it on my kitchen table, sometimes I move it on my lap in a recliner! I dream of a big office with bookshelves all around, a perfect desk and chair and a nice big window to look out while I write. But so far it's just a dream!
