Monday Mishmash 3/11/13

Happy Monday! Here's my mishmash of thoughts:

  1. Kindle Daily Deal!  Touch of Death was selected to be the Kindle Daily Deal today! I'm beyond excited. For today ONLY you can get Touch of Death on Kindle for $1.99! Yes, I said $1.99! Squee!
  2. School Library Journal  Touch of Death got a great review in the March issue of the School Library Journal. :)
  3. Happy birthday to my dad!  Today is my dad's birthday. If you're reading this, happy birthday, Dad!
  4. Drafting put on hold  I've had to put my WIP on hold for the time being. I have client edits and edits on my own books to get through, and unless I give up sleep completely, I just can't draft a new book right now. :(
  5. Giveaway  I'm participating in the Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop on Friday. My post will actually go up on Thursday since they like them up early, so check back for a giveaway for some great books.
That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

  2. You sound very busy. Last week my children were off school ill with slapped cheek so this week is a massive catch up on all fronts, writing included. A client has requested that I alter one of my scripts to suit their planned production so that's my priority this week.

  4. Wow! That's fabulous news, especially about the review. Could you put in a link to it? I hope you can find time to get back to drafting your new WIP soon. :-)

    1. The review is in print and online but you need a subscription to access it. I'm trying to find out if I can post just the review itself. Hopefully I'll be allowed to.

  8. That's great news Kelly!
I don't have an e-reader, but wonderful deals like this make me want to get one.
    Congrats on the review!
Remember to pace yourself (re: New Year's resolutions) and rest when needed!

  20. I need to write lesson plans but want to write, so I'm being productive by doing neither. In the meantime, I have to figure out how to balance writing lesson plans/giving feedback with drafting/editing.

    1. Balance is tricky. Right now I'm balancing a client edit with three deadlines for my own books. I had a mini-freak out this morning when that all came knocking down my inbox door. I'm breathing normally again now and plowing through.

Good luck with your lesson plans and your writing.

  21. Just back on the net again, in time to catch up with you Mishmash. First and foremost- Happy Birthday to Kelly’s dad! Surely you are too young to be a granddad, and the proud father of such a talented daughter- but the clock, it ticks away… Keep getting younger!

  23. I will be getting Touch of Death. At that price I can add it and just in time for baby!

Question - and maybe this is best for an email. BUT since you are miss edits - when do you decide on clients stories that removing dialogue or words is simply removing "wordiness" over a characters personality?

Good luck balancing everything!!! Repeat after me - "You are superwoman."

    1. Aw, thank you, Michelle! :) You're so sweet.

I think for your edit question, I need more specifics. Usually, dialogue is a great way to show personality. Feel free to email me if you have a specific question. I'd be happy to help.

  25. I just bought "Yes! You Can Learn How to Write Beginning Readers and Chapter Books" by Nancy I. Sanders.

I'll probably buy her first book in her "Yes, you CAN" how-to series, eventually...

I still find writing for readers younger than 8 scary, but I HAVE to get over it, if only to expand my range of my eventual readership. Wish my luck, Kelly, I WILL NEED IT. Especially for writing nonfiction, which you know is HARD for me.

    1. I have one of Nancy's books. It's the one about actually making money writing. LOL

Good luck, Taurean. Oh and where's your blog post about your book contract? I know you posted about it other places but I never saw anything on your blog.

    2. Oh, I know I've dragged my feet on that. I put in on hold when I was trying to move my blog from Blogger to Wordpress, so I can better customize it and make my minimalist layout more interesting.

But I was having so many technical nightmares last month, plus getting sick, and minor contract issues (Which I'm waiting to hear back on) got in the way.

I'll post it about it soon. I still want to move my blog to Wordpress. But it'll have to wait.

    3. I understand. I'm looking forward to your post.

Do you really like Wordpress better? I have a Wordpress account, but I don't like it as much so I don't use it. The Scene13 Blog I'm part of uses Wordpress and I find it has a lot more restrictions than Blogger. Just my experience though. I know a lot of people who like Wordpress.

      Delete
    4. Well, I've found it would be WAY easier for ME to customize the look of my blog, and I'm trying to get to a point where I have a clear path for future readers to find me.

I've heard so often Wordpress is easier to customize, and better optimize for search engines, and the only way it would be WAY harder is if you built it all (Layout, HTML/CCS stuff) which I won't do anytime soon.

Despite what some writers advise (Have an "All-in-one" package)I have to separate it out-

      -My overall author image

      -My focus on Animal Fantasy

-My interests in books and writing OUTSIDE Children's and YA, eventually I will branch out into adult fiction.

    5. Oh, another aside, the "limited access" thing might be because you're not the sole owner and operator of that Scene13 blog.

The owner of the admin account (The one who pays for the domain and hosting) always has the most control. On Blogger, the people I intended to be my co-bloggers during my long hiatus (Before life hit them HARD, too!) had the ability to post and edit their own posts, but full control of the blog was still mine, and they'd have to consult with me for any major changes they'd suggest.

If you're one of the co-admins of that blog, ask your co-admin if there's an error inadvertantly giving you limited control on your end.

    6. I've heard Wordpress is better for creating a website with a blog. I guess I haven't figured it all out yet. I have my website though and I don't plan to change it because that's a lot of info to move. So I'm happy with my website and this blog. Now if either Blogger or Webs.com go away, I'm in trouble. ;P

  34. Happy belated bday to Ms. Hasway's dad.

My Wednesday thoughts: behind a tad on my week (interviewing for new job takes up precious time, too much). Working on WIP. Had my first poem accepted for pub, nice since I don't consider myself a real poet. I discovered yesterday my novel made it to the quarter finals of the Amazon book contest. Surprised as I had forgotten to check when they announced the first round of winners. Freakier was reading the reviews. Strange reading what others who I don't know, talk about my characters. Had to have a glass of wine. :-)

  35. Great news about Touch of Death. I bet you're squeeing up and down the street or from the rooftop. Or maybe both, just don't jump off the roof to run down the street screaming you excitement. Congrats!
