Writer Wednesday: A New Release Every Two Months?

Now that I'm officially going indie, I can do exciting things like set my own production schedule. Why is this so exciting? Because over the years, I've had to either months between releases or releases stacked so close together it was tough to market my books. No more.

I have 2017 and 2018 mapped out and my release schedule looks like this:
January
April
July
October

That's two months between releases. Will it be tough? Yes! But I think the schedule is going to keep readers happy, and I work better on a schedule so I think I'll be happy too.

Right now, my January 2017 release is so close to being completely finished (and it's only September!). My April release is with my editor, and I'll be polishing up my July release to get that ready for my editor as well. Things are looking good so far. :)

Do you like when authors release books a few months apart?

*If you have a question you'd like me to answer from the other side of the editor's desk, feel free to leave it in the comments and I'll schedule it for a future post.

  1. I think that's epic! Best way to build up a readership. Unfortunately, I read so many DIFFERENT authors that I find it hard to follow any single author's release schedule. BUT when I do find something I'm in love with and there's a ton of it, I binge read. Big time.

  2. I think when an author has a riveting series already written, releasing so close together makes a lot of sense.
If this is new material, written as they go, I just can't imagine this speed to publication.
Best of luck with this new adventure, Kelly!

    1. Thanks, Mirka. In my case, everything is written, revised, and in final stages of editing. :)

  3. That's more books than James Patterson and I thought he was fast. Good luck.

    1. With all the books he coauthors, I feel like he always has a new release.

  4. Sounds great to me, especially in a series. I should have told you earlier, but I'm always late, had meetings today and stuff. You're on my blog, well, your book is. I really loved it.

    1. I just read your review. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book and it seems like you really got the emotions I was trying to convey. Nothing could make me happier. :) Thank you!

    2. Thanks, Kelly. The story took me back all those years and the uncertainty I felt when my boyfriend and I broke up, so I could relate to Mia's dilemma. I bet other readers can too.

  6. Congrats on going indie!! So question for you: Are you still with your agent then? And another question for you: How do you write so fast??!! Lol.

I think you're amazing. Keep 'em coming! :)

    1. My agent and I parted ways. A lot of indie authors do have agents though. I just need to go it alone for a while.

I use the butt-in-chair method for fast drafting.

  7. I guess it depends on the genre. My favourite genre tends to require about a year or so in between books, because there's a lot of research that goes into it.

    1. Research. It amazes me how much I have to research for fiction.

  8. If you can write 'em, people will read 'em, that's what I say! Just don't burn yourself out. I wish my favorite authors would publish more often...but publishers do slow that down quite a bit, as you've learned!
