Monday Mishmash and a Giveaway

Happy Monday! This mishmash will be short because I have a giveaway for you!

1. New Cover for Inbetween  Tara Fuller's upcoming YA release, Inbetween, has a new cover:

2. Picture book edits  I'm working on edits for one of my upcoming picture books. The toughest part is the publisher wants the title change. Eek! Did I mention I'm not very good with titles?

3. Only 6 months until Touch of Death!  Yesterday marked exactly 6 months until the release of my debut YA! Eep! I'm excited, so I'm doing a giveaway. What can you win? I have the typical SWAG (bookmarks and stickers) and some not so typical SWAG: a compact mirror with the 13th sign of the zodiac and a zombie deer. Yes, I said zombie deer. So, Jodi, my MC, is a necromancer and the first thing she brings back to life is a deer. My amazing editor Trisha Wooldridge kiddingly said I should giveaway zombie deer. So I am! My very talented sister, Heather DeRobertis, owns a company called True Poison, and she specializes in all things creepy and totally awesome. She made this deer—the only of it's kind—for me. I loved it and asked for more. The others are a little different. This is the only one that has intestines falling out of it. Are you grossed out? Well, it's actually adorable. Check it out:

Who wouldn't want to cuddle up with that? So, fill out the rafflecopter form below to enter to win. This contest is open until Friday, and I'll announce the winner on next week's mishmash.

And since it's Monday, what's on your mind today?

  1. I love the new Inbetween cover!

I don't want to ever see a horse as a zombie. Or clown zombies ::shudders::

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  2. Omg, your mc is a necromancer!? The only book where I have read a little about a necromancer is The Demon Trappers series by Jana Oliver and I always wanted to learn more about them. I cant wait to read your book. Should be getting my copy next month I think!

    1. It's not feeling long to me since I've been in edits and it just recently went to galleys. It definitely feels longer to the reader.

  5. I like the cover for In Between. Reminds me a lot of Lisa Schroeder's I Heart You, You Haunt Me (which is one of my favorite books.)

I'm not good at titles, either, and my agent asked me to come up with a new one for my picture book. If a title doesn't come to me as I'm writing a story, I usually have a terrible time coming up with one. She ended up coming up with one that we're using while it's on submission. Good luck with yours!

    1. My agent titled Touch of Death because my title was awful! LOL. What is it about titles that so tough. I have another book that my agent loved and told me, "You have to title it!" Oh, it was tough, but eventually the perfect title came to me right before we went on submission. :)

    1. Thanks, Katie. This deer is the only of its kind. The others kind of make me want to cuddle them and they are made with different materials. This is like the prototype in a why. I'm sure he'll find a happy home with the lucky winner. :)

  7. Just when I think I'd heard of everything... zombie deer. Well, why not? And it is kinda cute.

I struggle with titles, too - but I think part of it is I'm not willing to spend as long on them as I am on the "real" writing. I might rewrite my opening paragraph 50 or more times and think nothing of it, but I begrudge not being able to think of a great title after 30 minutes. For me the key is getting a working title then walking away from it and coming back a few times (and I'm still not usually happy with what I settle on).

  8. Yay for Touch Of Death release! In the begining of this year, 2013 sounded like a million years away. Now we are almost there. :) so excited. Ah, you are right, Kelly. The dear is adorable, cuddleworthy. I love this new cover of In Between.

    1. Thanks, Cecilia. I think the other deer are slightly more cuddly because they are a softer material. This one is the true zombie deer, the one and only.

  20. The fact that your MC is a necromancer makes it a must-read for me. Love dark fiction and i'm getting a bit bored with what is becoming the "everyday vampire."

It was so nice of your sister to create that zombie deer, Something really special to commemorate the release of your new book. I don't know if it were me that i'd be able to part with it.

Best Of Luck With Your Newest Release!

  22. Now that I've been traumatized by a the widget - I don't think an elephant would make an attractive zombie, nor would I come to think of it. On my mind are my aching muscles from a grueling workout session yesterday. Well, you did ask. Looking forward to reading Touch of Death. Six months - really? Dang.

  24. I'm no good with titles either! The book I'm finishing has a title almost the exact same to way too many other books (including one by a crit partner). The one in revisions barely has a name. It's tentative at best and will most definitely be changed.

By the way... I LOVE THE DEER!!

    Congrats Kelly!

I would NEVER want to see zombie ants...
I mean how many ants get killed in a day?
Now think if the zombie virus mutated and became dormant until death...
We would be over run with killer zombie ants in a very short amount of time ^^
