Monday Mishmash 12/3/18

Happy Monday! Monday Mishmash is a weekly meme dedicated to sharing what's on your mind. Feel free to grab the button and post your own Mishmash.

Here's what's on my mind today:
  1. Thank you!  I want to thank everyone who grabbed a copy of the Death and Damages boxed set. We are really hoping to hit the USA Today bestseller list this week, and every sale counts. Fingers crossed!
  2. Read Between the Crimes is up for preorder!  If you read A Vision A Day Keeps the Killer Away in the Death and Damages boxed set (or in paperback) and need book two in the Piper Ashwell Psychic P.I. series, you can go preorder it now.
    Amazon: https://amzn.to/2FQZfro
    B&N: https://bit.ly/2U5tttH
  3. New cover and title  While I was proofreading the paperback ARC of Better With You, my upcoming Ashelyn Drake contemporary romance, I realized the title and cover didn't fit the story quite right. Now I love the cover, so I will use it for another book, but I have retitled and had a new cover designed for this book. Check out The Time for Us designed by Fionn Jameson at Milk Tee Designs.
  4. Happy December and my birthday week  I have mixed feelings about the month of December. I love Christmas, but my birthday is a different story. This birthday is a big one for me, and I'm not really happy about it.
  5. Revising  I have to dive into a revision on a paranormal that's been sitting on my flash drive waiting for me to get back to it. I have the cover already, and wow, is it gorgeous!
That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

Monday Mishmash 8/13/18

Happy Monday! Monday Mishmash is a weekly meme dedicated to sharing what's on your mind. Feel free to grab the button and post your own Mishmash.

Here's what's on my mind today:
  1. Editing  I'm finishing up an edit for a client this week.
  2. Update on water issues  The water issues are all fixed now. We think. Fingers crossed.
  3. School assignments  On Friday, we get my daughter's team assignment for intermediate school. (Kids are divided among two teams and don't really interact with the other team.) And then begins the fun of finding out which of her friends are on her team. Wish me luck and no tears on her end please.
  4. The Day I Died Next month my YA paranormal The Day I Died releases. If you enjoyed If I Stay, then this book is for you. I have some eARCs available, so if you'd like one, let me know.
Chloe Hendrick never expected to die on her eighteenth birthday. And fate didn’t expect her to either.

There’s been a horrible mistake, and Chloe’s death throws off the balance of the universe, setting in motion several other deaths.
With the help of a spirit Guide, Chloe will have to relive her eighteenth birthday and try to figure out how to prevent her own death. But she has a limited number of chances to right this wrong, and each time she doesn’t succeed, more people will die.
But the more Chloe discovers about what’s really supposed to happen on her eighteenth birthday, the more she’s convinced death might be her best option.
  5. Publishing 2017 nearly killed me with all the books I released. I believe it was 9. This year isn't any better, but I've decided to push back the release of the Love Chronicles boxed set to October instead of this month. I need to stop pushing myself to the limit to get books out.
That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

Friday Feature: Fated

A Witch
An Immortal
And a Soul Reaper

Lana Longhorn has a "special gift" that causes people to reveal their deepest, darkest secrets. She thinks it's the reason for the tragic accident that killed her parents when she was a child and has become an expert at hiding her gift from the world by age eighteen.  That is, until a soul reaper from Hel walks into her life.

From the moment they meet, Syn Shabaka pushes Lana's buttons. He is the first person she's ever met who is immune to her gift, and the first person to offer her a way to be with other gifted people like her. The offer tempts her, but fear that he will discover the truth about her adopted family keeps her from accepting.

Lana has already lost one set of parents, and she refuses to lose another. As sparks fly between the pair, Lana must decide what is important, keeping her family safe or finding her happiness.

Friday Feature: United by Heather Young-Nichols

Captured by his own people.

Sentenced to death.

When the goblin Aric Bramble is kidnapped for treason, it’s up to Alyssum to rescue him from a dark fate. Yet saving him comes at a cost; their return to New York causes Alyssum’s world to shatter. She’s discovered things she can’t unlearn, information that contradicts everything she believes in and turns her world into a lie. Abandoning what she’s been taught, Alyssum seeks peace, and attempts to find a way to bring the Gremalians and the Gobel together…

A way to live without war.

But ending the war isn’t Alyssum’s only concern. Earth is now starting to rebel against its magical inhabitants. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters plague the Gremalians and the Gobel as a result of both kinds stealing Earth’s copper to enhance their own powers.

Will Alyssum bring both sides together? Or is it already too late to stop the coming disaster?

A young adult paranormal romance filled with action, adventure, and a bit of romance, United is an urban fantasy novel perfect for fans of author Heather Young-Nichols Grounded series.

The book is only $.99 so grab it on Amazon.
Heather Young-Nichols is a multi-published YA and contemporary romance author and a native of the great and often very cold state of Michigan. She is better known at home and to her friends as the Snarker-in-Chief, a job she excels at beyond anything she could have imagined. She loves many things, but especially cold coffee, hot books, and baseball. But not necessarily in that order.

Writer Wednesday: Boxed Sets

One of the new things I'm doing in 2017 is joining forces with other authors in boxed sets. One of them released yesterday.
Demons, Angels, Vampires, and Witches…
What do they all have in common?
If you want to survive in their world…you must be GIFTED.

Will they find you? Most likely.
Will you survive? Maybe.
However, one thing is certain, if and when you come across their radar…developing your GIFT is necessary!

7 FULL LENGTH novels by USA today, International, and Best Selling Authors.

Authored by:
Cassandra Fear
D.A. Roach
Nykki Mills
Jen Wilde
Kelly Hashway
Tawny Stokes
Apryl Baker

For this boxed set, my publisher made the decision to put seven of us together. I was very excited about the idea because multiple authors means multiple fan bases to pool. It also means sharing promotional ideas and the work of promoting. When one of us (or in some cases more than one) lost power and/or wifi during the preorder, the others picked up the slack. We shared in multiple newsletters, Facebook groups, and on all our social media platforms.

I love having the support system of other authors who want the set to succeed as much as I do. Writing and publishing can be lonely at times, but I didn't feel alone at all with this release. As a group, we talked, shared ideas, and supported each other. The experience definitely makes me excited for the next boxed set I'll be part of with an Ashelyn Drake title. More about that coming in the next couple months. ;)

But the really cool thing about boxed sets is they don't just help authors. They are HUGE deals for readers. I mean 7 books for $.99! That's crazy, right? Readers can grab up several books for very little cost and potentially find new authors to love. It's a win all around if you ask me.

What's your opinion of boxed sets? Do you love them as a reader? Have you ever been part of one?

If you're interested in grabbing Gifted for only $.99, you can do so here.

*If you have a question you'd like me to answer from the other side of the editor's desk, feel free to leave it in the comments and I'll schedule it for a future post.

Friday Feature: By the Icy Wind

The threat is far from over. I will live by the icy wild.

Ava Holland is dead. At least, that’s what everyone’s supposed to believe. But Ava is on her way to the northern wilds and hidden within the icy mountains are dangers that nobody dares speak aloud. Meanwhile, Michael is forced to accept Ava’s death while defending his new home against the growing darkness beyond.

When a mortality war begins, will anyone survive?

By the Icy Wild is the third book in an action-packed four-book series.

Check out books one and two if you haven't already:

What if everyone in the world was invincible… except you?

In an alternate version of today’s Earth, everyone is invincible. Since the beginning, people have been able to heal so fast that nobody can be hurt or killed. The normal lifespan ranges hundreds of years. Despite all that, Ava Holland is afraid of death. When the unthinkable happens, her only ally is the boy she should fear the most. Michael Bradley is the strongest, fastest healer anyone’s ever seen. But Michael has secrets too. Together, they run from a society that rejects them. Michael seeks redemption and Ava seeks safety, but when the truth is revealed, it’s up to Ava to save them both.

Beyond the Ever Reach is the first in an action-packed four-book series.

Fear is quiet. It waits for me beneath the guarding stars.

Ava and Michael have fought their way to Starsgard, a mysterious and secluded country powered by plant technology. But crossing the border comes with a price and their home country is ravaged by fear and hatred of mortals. They soon discover that peace is an illusion and danger is closer than they feared.

Set in an alternate version of today’s Earth where everyone is invincible… except one girl.

Beneath the Guarding Stars is the second book in an action-packed four-book series.
Everly Frost once wore a t-shirt with "geek girl" on it and felt right at home in it. She loves soaring forests, brilliant sunrises, and clouds that form the shapes of dragons. For whatever reason, she never finishes a cup of coffee.

Friday Feature: Ghost Touch by LA Dragoni

For fifteen minutes each night a portal opens in Tamara’s barn and a horde of ghosts spills into her yard. She and Dex work together to find a way to help Cal and the thousands of spirits stuck in the void to cross over. When she learns she has the ghost touch—the ability to touch the ghosts as if they were corporeal—and she accidentally helps a little boy cross, she believes it might be possible. But not all the spirits play nice and when they learn they can sip energy from her ghost touch, they become greedy putting her life at risk.

Each time Cal has to pull her from the mass of ghosts, her touch restores him more and more until he is at danger of being stuck on earth—forever, which is very enticing to Tamara the better she knows him. Will she and Dex figure out how to help the spirits cross and if they do, will she be able to let Cal go?

Available in print, ebook, and audiobook from Amazon,
Also available on Barnes and Noble, Kobo, iTunes, and other e-tailers.

Excerpt:

The knot of ghosts hissed and shrieked as they chased her. Seeing they’d already changed direction, she dug her fingers into the grass to pull herself away from them. Her legs were as shaky as a newborn foal and even crawling was too much effort. Ruff stood next to her, barking, but she knew he’d have no effect. He couldn’t even touch the ghouls.
Then they were on her. Petting and pulling, stroking and grabbing at her arms, legs, clothes, hair. Their chatter became excited, reminding her of a pack of hyenas. She buried her head under her arms wishing…praying they’d go away.
“Get off her!”
Was that Cal? Tamara raised her head as much as she could, but was still buried in spirits. She got a glance at a familiar face before the writhing group closed in again. Was that the drowned ghost? She looked less bloated.
“Leave her. This will not help. Get away.”
Slowly the weight lifted from her until she felt only one pair of hands grasping her upper arms. Gentle and caring, not demanding.
“Cal,” she croaked, struggling to raise her head and open her eyes.
“Come on, Tamara. You need to get up.”
Her eyelids were so heavy. She couldn’t hold them open. Couldn’t make her neck cooperate so she could look at Cal.
“Tamara, you need to move him. I can’t touch him.”
“Let go of me Cal. You’re making it worse. I think.” Even speaking drained her of energy. It took all she had just to force the words out, but when Cal let go of her, she felt a difference immediately. It was as if her strength no longer leaked out of her extremities. Unfortunately her tank didn’t seem to be refilling very fast. “I…it’s…it’s better. Give me a minute.”
“We don’t really have a minute, Tamara.”

Reviews:

LA Dragoni's GHOST TOUCH got me out of my paranormal romance funk in which I felt like I was reading the same book over and over again. The ghost part with the portal opening in Tamara's barn was vividly described and equal parts cool and terrifying, but it was really Tamara's poignant emotional journey that spoke to me.

But when the boogeyman knocks,
if you are up watching…
he’ll make sure that you wish you were dead!

Once every one hundred and fifty years he emerges from the darkest depths to feed. With each soul he takes, he grows stronger. There is but one gift he needs in order to gain the power he seeks. One gift that will allow him to walk amongst all the precious little children.

And it’s the one gift Mattie Hathaway possesses…the ability to bring images to life with just a drop of her blood. The demon Silas has warned her to never reveal this ability, not even to her father who shares her power to communicate with the dead. She’s heeded his warning, but hiding it may no longer be an option.

Children are disappearing all over the Charlotte area. When their bodies are recovered, they are always the same—broken, beaten, and bruised. Fear is spiraling out of control in the Queen City as parents glance nervously around each corner, seeing the boogeyman in every shadow.

When one little girl goes missing in Mattie’s neighborhood, it’s up to her and Officer Dan Richards to find the truth. In doing so, she uncovers a far greater evil than she’s ever come up against. The one thing she was bred to defeat.

Deleriel. A fallen angel…one of the first demons. He is powerful, ambitious, and now that Mattie is on his radar, she’s all he needs to complete his arsenal.

Amid of whirlwind of secrets coming to light, Mattie is faced with uncovering the truth about her own heritage. She must come to grips with it before she can begin to prepare for the battle of a lifetime…a battle she never asked for but is caught in the middle of.

Can she face her own truths before it’s too late?

MEET APRYL BAKER: So who am I? Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there’s always someone to tell your mama you were seen kissing a particular boy on a particular day just a little too long. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled “Lord Margrave’s Deception.” I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my niece and nephew and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce…lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
