My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris (Review)

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century
Synopsis:
On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly soon-to-be stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family's trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore. Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

My thoughts:
Cat's tried to avoid the spotlight all her life, which isn't easy to do with a mother who's constantly gracing the covers of the tabloids with yet another love interest and a father who's successful in the film industry. And with Cat's sixteenth birthday coming up and her future mother-in-law wanting to throw a huge party with MTV and cameras everywhere, Cat just wants to run and hide. Except she doesn't expect to hide in the 16th century.

But thanks to a gypsy, that's exactly where she ends up. Even though she struggles a bit to fit in, she learns a lot about family, friends, and falling in love.

I loved this book. Cat is a character that you can't get enough of. And Lorenzo is the guy every girl wants to date. Between the Italian landscape, Cat's blooming romance, and the great cast of characters that become Cat's new family, this is one journey into the past that I'll take again and again. I can't wait to read the sequel.

Just for fun: If you could go back to any time period in history, which would it be?

  1. I would go back to the renaissance actually so this is right up my ally. Simpler times and full of art and love. That's my romantic view anyway!

  3. Oh, I love time travel stories. The cover is gorgeous. Your review makes me want to read the book. Must add it to my ever growing list.

As for going back in time, I think I'd like the 50s when I was a teen. Life was much simpler then, and I'd like to meet my old friends again.

  5. Great review...I guess I'm not the only one who loves the Renaissance. This books sounds so fun!

But, if I had to pick a time period I'd probably go to early 19th-century England and look around for Mr. Darcy! ha ha

  8. This one is in my TBR pile. Glad to here you liked it! As far as going back, well, I was a history major in college, so I can't pick just one time and place!

  9. I've had my eye on this one for a while. I guess I need to make another Amazon trip. I would love to spend a few days in 1920s America.

  13. I've been to Florence! It. Is. Phenomenal.

I would probably go back to the 1940s. I am just fascinated with that era for some reason. Between the war, the music, and the clothes...I'm in awe :)

  19. Trouble is with back periods of history, they didn't have proper loos, or fresh water and the food was awful. And no deodorants. And no proper medical facilities. So....I'd like to go back to the past, but with all the modern nice bits!!(Cop out...cop out..)

  20. I don't usually read YA, sorry Kelly, but I will probably read yours when it comes out being blog buddies and all, but I have to say this title intrigued me. Looks like something I would enjoy.

  21. Hmmm.... if I went back in time, I'd probably go to the turn of last century, the early 1900s. I can imagine chaining myself to buildings with the other suffragettes and shouting 'Votes for Women'!

  22. I read this the other day and loved it, too. Even though I predicted what would eventually happen with Lorenzo, I really wished she brought him back. I cant' wait for the sequel. Less was one of my favorite characters!

  23. Sounds good!

For me... to go back in time, it would be one of two things. The American Civil War, or the Lewis and Clark expedition.
