Goals for 2013

I don't make resolutions because I find them easy to break. So here are the goals I'm going to hold myself accountable for in 2013:
  • Market the 5 books I have releasing in 2013 to the best of my ability.
  • Write at least 3 new books.
  • Read more new releases.
  • Work more downtime into my schedule to better take care of my health.
  • Attend BEA for the first time.
I'm keeping it short this year because I have no idea how busy I'm going to be with my books releasing and I don't like to set goals I can't meet.

How about you? What are your goals for 2013?

  1. My goal is to spend more time focussing on my University work than reading. I always tend to do things last minute because of blogging and reading. I only have 5/6 months left so my goal is to take a back-seat for that time and concentrate more on University... even though I don't want to haha

    1. I don't know how you do it all, Kayleigh. And now you work for SHP Contemporary, don't you? You're amazing!

  2. As long as you have some "Me" time, those are doable Kelly. I'm going for a submission a month, and finish a book I'm working on. Short and sweet.

    1. That's good, Terrie. Make it manageable. That's my goal this year. I always set really high expectations and I need some me time in there.

  3. I have no doubt you will accomplish them all! I like that you put on there some down time! You are the kind of person who has to schedule it in!

    1. I do, Jodi. I actually thought of you when I sat down to write my goals. I've learned a lot from you this past year. Thank you.

  4. I have a book releasing in May to promote, and a short story in Month9Books's next anthology. I also need to write two more books in my MG fantasy series and copy-edit the first one.

I am also hoping to attend BEA! Maybe I'll see you there!

    1. LOL. My goal for 2012 was to write 6 books. I did it, but it was close! I'm downsizing for 2013 because I'm sure I'll be very busy promoting the books I have coming out.

  6. I'm going to less writing and more marketing. No I'm not

  7. Ambitious goals!
I plan to write as much as I can. I teach at the Philadelphia Writing Conference in June, and I attend a Cape writing retreat in July.

  8. Hey Kelly,
Wonderful goals! Marketing 5 books and writing 3 more...OK, at some point in the near future, you need to teach a teleseminar about writerly productivity!
I want to echo your point about health--it is a long term investment and if we want to write into our 60s, 70s and 80s like Eudora Welty, Ursula Le Guin, Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood, we've got to take care of our bodies.

    1. Exactly! I'm learning that I need to take care of my health if I want to enjoy any successes I might have. I definitely want to write my entire life.

  9. I like your list Kelly. It's succinct and to the point. I've trimmed mine down too in the hope that if I keep it simple it's a whole lot easier to sit down and get to the work more quickly, less thinking and wondering about what to do. And like you I hope to get a lot more reading done this coming year also...thinking about setting a challenge for that, but on the other hand want reading to be the down-time, and not a pressure!! Good luck with your list xxx

    1. Yes, reading should be relaxing. I find since I review books, I get in pressure situations to finish and review them on time. Not a good situation.

  10. Wow! What an intimidating list! After reading your previous blog entry, though, I have no doubt you'll be able to do it. Best of luck!

  13. I would like to get back to reading more, but I have so many stories floating around in my head that want to be written! Keeping up with social media and marketing my books will also be a big challenge this year. Good luck with your goals and have a Happy New Year!

  14. I'm still trying to come up with my list. So many things floating around in my head. I'd like to make more time to write and read. I seem to be reading less nowadays. Yes, please. Take time off to take care of your health. :)

    1. I'm being much more conscientious when it comes to my health. I have a tendency to get crazy and work myself into the ground, but I'm making an effort to eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep from now on.

  16. 2013 is going to be a busy and exciting year for you! Keeping your list of goals concise is a wise move but I am going to suggest one addition:

Celebrate each launch in the most joyful way!

And we will all be celebrating with you! *getting out the pompoms*

  17. Sounds like you're going to have an awesome and busy year. Good luck! I'm stil working out my goals for next year.

  18. I haven't thought about them yet as I am frantically trying to finish a Dec 2012 goal - finish the third novella and go back and make character changes to the first two. I suspect I might run over in to 2013. I see my 2013 goals floating outside the French Doors. They are wooing me with sweet nothings but I have to stay right here in my chair. I am glad to see there is a section in your list for ME TIME. I suggest taking yourself out for coffee - away from the house and the computer, bring a book and your writer's journal, this way you'll feel as if you haven't left your passion entirely alone at home. Merry Merry.

  23. Great goals list. My goals for 2013 are (a) to get the third draft finished on my novel, in fact, all the drafts of it until it's as polished as it can be to send off to agents or publishers, (b) write a couple more plays for my business, (c) lose weight, (d) concentrate on more couple time with my husband, and (e) keep to my routine of writing and other work.

  24. Awesome goals Kelly. Happy New Year to you. I think I'll be publishing, reading and writing. Maybe I'll do things differently next year, but I don't really have a plan yet.

  25. Those are great goals, Kelly. Take care of your health ~ always. Then keep writing and reading. :) For me, it's publishing the next PB, finishing my MG novel revisions, reading, drawing, and tutoring.

My goal is to finish my first Young Fighters novel.
