Writer Wednesday: Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

Summer is always tough for me. My daughter is home, which means being Mom takes up most of my days. My new job as an acquisitions editor added more work to my already full plate. On top of that, I'm booked solid with my own editing clients for the rest of 2015. So yeah, I haven't been writing as much. But things are going to change soon.

School begins on Monday, and that means I'll be working full days again. My plan is to devote mornings to me and afternoons to Seek. Splitting my day up will allow me time to edit for my clients and write for me, while still handling my duties for Leap Books. Or at least that's the plan. ;)

I'm going to miss my daughter though. She's my buddy. There's nothing I love more than being with her, but I know she is excited to start a new school year (Third grade already? How did she get so big?) and see all of her friends again. So here's to a great start to the school year and life getting back to a routine.

  1. I bet you will miss her. They grow up so fast. I homeschool, so I don't have to miss the kiddies. But I do get what a plate full is. I'm glad you'll have more time for your own stuff. Oh, and btw, Happy Blitz Day! Enjoy. :-)

  3. I have always homeschooled my girls who are now 15 and 17, so I can relate to "going to miss them". In February (I am in the Southern Hemisphere so that is the beginning of the school year) one goes to Uni while the other is going on an international student exchange for a year. Sounds like you have a good plan in place. Happy blitz day.

  5. Sounds like you have it all planned out. My kids go back to school (my son starts high school) on Wednesday, so it'll be a welcome return to a peaceful morning of writing from then.

    1. My daughter does give me time to work. She's very good like that, but having the day to work definitely allows me to accomplish more.

  12. I envy you, planning a schedule (and I'll bet you'll keep to it, too). Even after a year of working full time, I have trouble keeping to a schedule for writing and housework and exercise. Especially since I HATE exercise and resent every second that it keeps me off the computer.

I guess, looking forward into September, I could try once more to mold myself into, if not a schedule, at least a pattern!

  14. How sweet. It's that time of year where many are in back to school mode. For me, it's a little different. I'm a T.A. but I don't any kids. My summers are always super busy doing all the things I can't do during the school year, but then when school starts, I become busy in a different way. My writing productivity goes down when school starts, but that's okay. It's always good to see the kids again.
    Happy Blitz Day!

  15. Sounds like you had a good but busy summer. Always hard when the kids go back to school, especially if you enjoyed the time together. They do grow up so quickly so do enjoy these days, as I know you do! May your daughter have a great 3rd grade and you have success in what you want to accomplish once the school year begins again! Happy Blitz!

  17. I raised my prices for my freelance writing business because I thought some of them would go away. Only one did--the rest agreed to the HUGE price hike and are sending me regular work. So now...UGH! But I'm on a freelancers' forum and I have to say, it seems pretty rare to be able to land regular work from a full stable of clients...so we're very lucky!

  18. The transition for back to school isn't so smooth all the time, for sure. Happy Blitz Day!

  35. I know. Work life is more productive when the kiddos head back to school, but it's easy to miss them, too. It's strange for me, now having two in college (a freshman & a senior). Obviously, they're not around too much. My junior in high school and sixth grader will still keep me busy, but at least I can write while they're at school. :) Happy Blitz Day!!!

  74. Kelly, I totally understand the busyness of different seasons! I've been in a busy "season" for a while--working a full-time job for over a year, plus working on my master's, has meant I've had very, very little time for writing. I'm going on maternity leave soon and then will be a mostly-stay-at-home mom and you know, even with an infant, I think I'll have more time for writing and blogging than I do now! :)
