Writer Wednesday: Guest Blogger Ayla Hashway Talks About Writing Her First Novel

It gives me great pleasure to introduce my guest blogger today. She's writing her first novel and she happens to be my nine-year-old daughter, Ayla. Please welcome her!

Hi, I'm Ayla and I am proud to say that I am in the middle of writing my first novel! I found out that you should do the book on paper first so it's mostly copying off of the paper. It also helps to write notes so it goes faster. I think picking out a cover once you have most of it planned is easier so you can describe it better. Also, add in a lot of detail to make it more interesting. You also do the cover ahead of time because then it will motivate you to do your best and work on it more.

I had writers block right in the one part of my book, so my mom and I went on a walk and talked it through. It literally took an hour, so don't rush on the book. It will not do you any good. Writing is a lot of fun if you don't rush, plan it through, and do your best! Another thing is don't always pick out the title first because as I went on I realized that the original name didn't go along any more.

I hope you all have fun writing, so keep calm and write on! I hope you enjoy reading and writing your own books.

Thank you for sharing your experience with everyone, Ayla. I can't wait to see your book once it's finished! <3 span="">

  1. Ayla, writing your first book at the tender age of 9 is wonderful and your mom will be a fantastic guide and resource for you. For 12 years I've been a volunteer at Gilham Elementary School in Eugene, Oregon; I mostly bounce between 4 & 5 grades. So I am very excited to read your book and I would love to share it with them. I heard you were out of school for the summer already; our students don't get out until June 16th. Enjoy your summer and best wishes on completing your book; I can't wait to read it!

    1. Thank you so much! Ever since you said you wanted a signed copy of my book I have been working on it in my free time and most of the day. When my mom showed me your post, it made my day and I've been working on it more and more each day! I hope you enjoy reading it. I'm already on chapter nine. There are many mysteries and adventures in it. I am now done with third grade, so I am in fourth grade now. I still miss my friends though. Have fun teaching!

  4. Ayla, that's amazing that you're following your dream of writing a book! Also, how do you pronounce your name? I'm sure I'm not getting it right. =)

    1. It's the same pronunciation as Kayla, except drop the K. Don't worry. Most people don't know how to say it anyway. Have a great summer!

  5. You have the best coach and guide, Ayla. Use your resources and you will do well. (Also-- make sure you finish the first draft, no matter what. that is my advice.)

  6. Hi Ayla. Congratulations on your first novel. I can't wait to read it. You are doing something I wish I had started when I was a lot younger.

I love your advice about not rushing it. I’ll add this to my writer’s advice to remember. I think you are right. It’s best to take the time to get it right. I’ll also add your, “Keep calm and write on!” I think that’s the best advice ever. Keep calm even through writer’s block, first drafts, revision, and editing. “Keep calm and write on!
