Next Big Thing

I've been tagged by the amazing Catherine Stine for the Next Big Thing. Thanks, Catherine! So here I go!

What's the working title of your book?
INTO THE FIRE

Where did the idea come from for the book?
I've loved the idea of Phoenixes ever since I saw the original Dark Shadows TV series from the 70s. (I saw it in reruns.) There were only about two episodes that featured Phoenixes but they got to me.

What genre does your book fall under?
Paranormal

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie?
I'd say Candice Accola (Caroline on The Vampire Diaries) for Cara. And Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) for Logan.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Sixteen-year-old Cara Tillman, a descendant from the mythical phoenix bird, is nearing her rebirth where she will forget everything, including the love of her life, Logan, and attempts to embrace her last days with him even if it means drawing deadly phoenix hunters to her doorstep.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I'm represented by Lauren Hammond of ADA Management and the book is being published by Month9Books in spring 2014.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
8 days, but I made a major change in edits so I'm rewriting most of it. LOL

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I can't think of another Phoenix book!

What else about your book might pique the reader's interest?
Phoenixes! They die and are reborn. What more do you need? ;)

Here are the people I'm tagging:
Sheri Larsen
Darcy Karchut
Emily White

Now for all of you, what's your WIP about?

  3. Sounds like a fun idea. I love the idea of taking a well know mythological creature and creating something new with it.

  5. Phoenixes, eh? How cool is that! Logan Lerman seems like a popular actor these days. As far as the actual writing of your novel, I wish I could write as fast as you can! I am picking up a bit of speed on my sequel, so hopefully, I'll maintain that speed.

  7. Congrats, Kelly! And I have to agree with the others here, 8 days is a very ambitious goal that you met. That is awesome!

  8. I think I've said it before, but I loved the idea of this story. Phoenix stories aren't super popular, so it's definitely a unique idea. Congrats on the award!

    1. Thanks, Kat. Yeah, the lack of Phoenix stories is a good thing in my opinion. I'm not one to jump on band wagons. I'd rather start the trend, if possible.

  9. I absolutely love Candice Accola (Caroline is my favorite character on the Vampire Diaries, and second is Damion).
Your book sounds wonderful, I love that you are going with a unique concept, I wish there was more of that in the publishing industry. Congrats on the tag Kelly, as usual thank you for the great post :)

    1. I usually don't talk about my works in progress but I made an exception since this is already contracted.

  13. This sounds awesome! I've always loved Phoenix stories, particularly in the X-Men comics I read as a kid (and still read).

    1. But in that case, it's the Cosmic Flaming Parrot that inhabits those comic books...

  14. 8 days? I don't think I can draft that fast. I think my fastest draft took a month and a half.

    The story sounds fantastic.

    1. Thanks, Medeia. Deadlines will make you draft faster—at least that's what happened to me. And having my daughter in school full time didn't hurt either.

  15. I'll second Medeia. Sounds like a fantastic book! (I can't draft in 8 days either ...)

  16. Eight days?

I think the fastest I drafted a book, on deadline, was three months. And my kids were in school and I didn't have a day job. But it didn't need much revision, either. Actually, I revise as I go, so my first draft already has some later drafts built in, I guess you could say.
