Seasons in Publishing?

Have you ever heard that there are seasons in publishing? This time of year, most publishers are winding down and closing up for a while. It's very much like how many publishers slow down in the summer months.

But somehow this year seems different. I'm getting edits and proofs for my own books and tons of edits for my clients. I kind of expected things to get quiet for the holidays and pick back up in January. Not so. I feel busier than ever. It has me wondering if there aren't off seasons after all.

Anyone else noticing this?

*On a side note, I've been so busy I forgot my own blogiversary! But I am currently running a giveaway for an ARC of Touch of Death and SWAG for Touch of Death and Love All, so make sure you enter here.

  1. Congrats on your anniversary!

I've not been very busy. My writing group hasn't met in over two months because each of us has been busy with different things over the holidays. I'm waiting for January so things pick back up for me!

    :)

    1. Ah, so you do have a down season. That's more how I'm used to things being this time of year. Not complaining though. I love my job. :)

  2. I have heard that things typically slowed down during this time of year (most businesses do), but I guess its a good thing your not experiencing that.

I hope you have a joyous holidays! :)

    1. Very good point! LOL. I have to say I love being a writer and an editor. Both jobs are amazing, so I'm happy to be busy.

  3. I have heard about this, Kelly. The seasonal slow-downs make sense, but I have never experienced them in personal feedback or work with publishers.

  4. I'm experiencing the same thing, Kelly! It kind of sucks, as I was hoping to have some time off--but the more work, the more money, right? I'm sure you'll power through it, though. Make sure you take plenty of time off this season to spend with your family. :)

    1. That's right, Kiersi. I'm not about to complain about working. I love it. I will definitely make time for my family, though. I consider that one of my jobs, too. I'm Mom first. :)

  5. Most writers I know began receiving far fewer query and submission responses from about Dec 15th, so I think most of the biz slows down. Not you or your pubber though -- you guys keep rockin' it out! :-)

    1. LOL. Yes, I guess it's because I'm on the other side now. Things are still done internally, but submissions slow down for most.

  6. Maybe you're on to something. Usually the holiday season is slower, but this year I've been as busy as ever. Maybe times are changing with so many new publishers.

Yeah, I'd not submit anything until after the holidays. I doubt it would get read, so I'm using this time to spiff my story up and get it ready to send.

    1. Yes, times could be changing. That wouldn't surprise me. :)

  7. Things are changing a bit, I believe. I agree with Beverly ^^. It's probably because of so many new books out, there is no time for "down time" anymore, which is not the best for writers or the industry. Down time sparks new ideas.

Oh, well. Best of luck with everything you have to do, Kelly. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.

  8. I've been hoping the reason I haven't heard back on queries and fulls is the holiday season. Is no news good or bad? LOL

    1. The holidays are most likely the reason. I think query responses are definitely going to slow down until after New Years.

  10. Sounds like you have been busy! I have heard about the seasons of the industry, but only know that I have felt very busy this season- not sure about the publishing world! Wishing you some down time to relax and enjoy your family and friends. :)

  11. My boss has been doing so much networking for the past few weeks, I haven't written a word. Now he's on another continent for a few weeks. I'm heading for my keyboard.

  12. I've been hearing about things slowing down in publishing, but maybe people are still running strong with current projects.

I got an email early this morning that Touch of Death was sent to my Kindle devices. I can't wait to sync my iPad and Kindle to see the book.

  13. Just a quick comment from 'the Brit' - I'm holding a blog party to celebrate Christmas - and it reminds me that you were one of the first lovely American friends I met online back in June. So I'd like to wish you and your family a Very Happy Christmas, and a successful New Year!! Can't wait for my copy of Touch of Death to arrive. I WILL be the first to review it on Amazon.co.uk!!
