Bathrooms Make Great Settings

Yes, you read that correctly. I made a recent discovery that I like to set scenes in bathrooms. Why? Weird things happen to me in bathrooms. Weird things happen to my family members in bathrooms. So, it only seems natural that weird things would happen to my characters in bathrooms.

To be different, I'm sharing a video I made of me reading one of my favorite bathroom scenes in Touch of Death. Enjoy!

Do you have any weird settings that pop up often in your books?

  2. I've done bathroom scenes, but none in my current project. Although, I have several scenes in and near a dumpster. :)

  3. I don't include too many bathroom scenes in my work, but in one of my WIPs the bathroom is the setting of a very crucial scene.

  6. Bathrooms are intruguing. There is so much to do in there, ya know? I guess I am preaching to the choir!

  7. Too funny. I've realized that I like to set scenes in kitchens. I'll have to shake it up a bit and try a bathroom!

    1. LOL. I have a few kitchen scenes in one of my YA paranormal series. They make good settings, too.

  9. Blocked by firewall. GRRRR. I'll have to watch it later on.

I've just started chapter 3, Kelly. Green eyes sure is creepy, but I love the intrigue so far! :)

  10. I've had a few bathroom scenes in my wip, but nothing quite so fun :) Definitely dumpsters though--they somehow always end up in my work!

  11. Bathrooms make us vulnerable. Make your on conclusions from that.

  12. Ooooo, I love the video with you reading your story. :) I get a lot of ideas in the bathroom, my characters follow me into the shower. But, I never thought of actual bathroom scenes. Cool!

    1. My characters follow me into the shower, too. They just don't understand personal space. ;)

  13. You know what - bathrooms are essential to us so it just makes sense. Granted I don't have anything crazy happen in mine or in my books with a bathroom. If i can find a way to add a graveyard I will always try to do that though. I grew up with my backyard being that - a real graveyard.

  14. When you come to think about it, it's where we spend a lot of our time, right? :-)

  15. I manage to avoid the bathroom *completely*- maybe my characters just don't go there???
I do have empty/mysterious houses in many of my stories. I think writers do have these 'ticks.'

    1. Yes, we do.

My bathroom scenes usually don't involve normal bathroom functions, if you know what I mean. Strange things happen in the bathroom instead.

  17. Really funny Kelly! Bathrooms, eh? I'm trying to think of some weird settings I use. I did have a character jump out of a closet in my latest WIP.

  18. There is something about a bathroom scene. LOL! A couple of my books have them, the story I'm revising now for one. Something is wrong with my computer and I couldn't hear your trailer. Will try another time.

  19. I had to think hard, but I have written a scene in a bathroom. It's centered around a high school, and I think a lot of dramatic events happen in school bathrooms, which means the kids can relate easily! :)

    1. Very true! Bathrooms in high schools are place for secrets, tears, and things kids shouldn't be doing but are going to anyway. All that makes for drama and good story conflict.

  20. Bathrooms - best ever place for the strange and obscure. Before you were married - did you ever hang out with the girls in bars or go dancing? I've traveled a fair bit - hotel bathrooms, what a hoot. I feel a story growing as I recall. Great read, btw.

  21. Well I'd have to rephrase the word "weird" to "DISGUSTING" things happen in the bathroom. But some of those do make for good reading! Especially when things happen in a bathroom filled with girls or women. For some reason, it makes us women tell our deepest, darkest secrets!

  22. Cafes. A lot of my books feature cafes. With cakes. Different sorts of cakes. But cakes. Yes.

  23. This made me laugh! I know of a lot of weird things that have happened to family and friends in bathrooms. Oddly enough- buses seem to come up in my stories. :)

  24. Come to think of it, I've never written a bathroom scene! Mine are usually in the kitchen, or near a river/sea.

    1. Kitchens and bodies of water both make great settings.

  25. I've incorporated bathrooms in a minimal way in my solo writing- a character in the shower- but mostly my material requires being outside.
